‘Meet the producers’ at Drewton’s Farm Shop

Published: 15/05/2012

Food and drink producers from across Yorkshire and beyond will visit Drewton's Farm Shop near South Cave on Sunday 20 May as part of a special event aimed at raising awareness among consumers about how and where our food is produced.

The 'Meet the Producer' event will be attended by a selection of the 140 Yorkshire-based growers and producers who supply their goods to Drewton's. More than 80 per cent of the produce on sale at the popular Farm Shop is grown or produced right here in Yorkshire, although some of the wine and delicatessen produce comes from further afield.

Katie Taylor, proprietor of Drewton's, achieved her long-held ambition of opening a Farm Shop championing local produce in October 2010 and has quickly developed an extensive network of suppliers from across the region. She prides herself on carefully selecting and showcasing the finest food and drink that Yorkshire has to offer, and has made it her mission to inform consumers about the importance of buying and eating local, seasonal, high welfare produce, wherever possible.

She said: "I think that helping customers to make informed decisions about the food and drink that they buy is an important part of our role. At our 'Meet the Producer' event, a variety of our suppliers will be on hand to chat to customers about the provenance of the goods on sale in the shop. This time, we've tried to include a number of suppliers with products for people with special dietary requirements, such as wheat-free, gluten-free, sugar-free and dairy-free items.

"We hope that our customers will enjoy chatting to our suppliers, as well as sampling some of their products."

Gluten Free Kitchen from Leyburn in North Yorkshire, which supplies gluten-free bread, cakes and pies; El Dorado of Beverley, which supplies a South American salsa; Moorlands Cyder of North Newbald; free range pork producer Anna's Happy Trotters of Howden; Quality Quails eggs from Cottingham; and Bracken Hill of Elvington, which supplies preserves and chutneys, are just a few of the producers attending on the day. A small number of suppliers from further afield will also be there, including Avlaki Oils, a London-based supplier of Greek olive oils; Sharpham Park from Somerset with their healthy spelt products; and Shaw Meats from Cumbria, producers of delicious salamis.

The event will take place from 10am onwards, when the Farm Shop opens.
