140 Yorkshire food and drink producers

Published: 20/07/2011

Just nine months after opening for business, Drewton's Farm Shop at South Cave is already supporting a network of almost 140 food producers, growers and suppliers from across Yorkshire.

These businesses supply Drewton's with everything from fresh meat, fruit and vegetables to chutneys, preserves and cheeses.

This commitment to championing Yorkshire produce and boosting the regional economy means that Drewton's has quickly established itself as one of the leading farm shops in the Yorkshire region. As well as becoming a popular eating and shopping destination for people from across East Yorkshire and beyond, Drewton's has a core customer base of local people who get almost all of their daily shopping requirements there.

In total, Drewton's is supplied by 136 different Yorkshire food and drink producers; has provided much-needed employment for 41 local people in a rural area; and has supported 20 different charities. Drewton's also works closely with more than 40 other Yorkshire businesses, which supply it with everything from marketing and design to accountancy services.

This achievement is all the more impressive given that Drewton's only opened for business in October of last year when Katie Taylor, who own and runs the farm shop, finally saw her dream become a reality.

Katie said: "Since opening, we've spent time building up links with other Yorkshire businesses. I'm very passionate about reducing food miles and encouraging people to make the most of the fantastic seasonal produce that we have right here on our doorsteps in Yorkshire. I'm really proud that at least 80 per cent of the produce on offer at Drewton's is local, although some of the wine and delicatessen produce comes from further afield.

"For example, in the butcher's shop, we sell Aberdeen Angus beef, pheasant and partridge sourced from right here on The Drewton Estate at South Cave - you can't get more local than that! We sell it alongside high-quality, free range poultry, pork and lamb from Yorkshire farms. Customers can also buy local venison, pigeon, duck, rabbit, hare, quail and guinea fowl; dry-cured bacon; York ham; locally-smoked gammon and poultry; and pork pies, pasties and sausage rolls. The variety of food and drink on offer here is endless and it's almost all from Yorkshire!"

Once a month, Drewton's stages a 'Meet the producer' day to enable customers to get to know the Yorkshire suppliers behind the produce on sale. The next events will take place on Sunday 24 July and Sunday 21 August. A selection of different growers, producers and suppliers will attend each event to talk to customers about the provenance of the items in their shopping baskets and give them an opportunity to taste different products. There will also be live musical entertainment and great food on offer.
