Drewton's Farm Shop to add two new pies to its range following British Pie Week competition

Published: 19/03/2012

Customers of Drewton's Farm Shop near South Cave came up with a variety of weird and wonderful pie filling suggestions as part of a competition to mark British Pie Week.

The annual event ran from March 5 to 11 and Drewton's asked customers to come up with ideas for pies that they'd like to see on sale in the shop and on the menu on the restaurant. Some of the more unusual suggestions included curry pie; sausage and baked bean pie; and full English breakfast pie.

Kath Brown, who runs the Baker department at Drewton's, said: "We loved hearing people's suggestions for new pie fillings and received plenty of quirky ideas, although I'm not sure how well some of them would have gone down with other customers! I suspect things like curry pie might be an acquired taste!"

"Other good filling suggestions included chilli con carne pie; leftover vegetable pie; salmon, dill and cream cheese pie; chicken, ham, leek and sweetcorn pie; steak and stilton pie; lamb and mint pie; venison, red wine and juniper berry pie; and apple pie with cheese inside."

Winning pie fillings chosen from customer and staff suggestions

In the end, Katie Taylor, who owns and runs Drewton's, plumped for a suggestion put forward by regular customers Bernard Jordan and Wilf Norman, who travel over from Beeford, near Driffield every week for lunch.

She explained: "Bernard and Wilf wanted us to start making a classic Yorkshire 'meat and tatie' pie and I think that will be a real winner with our customers. We'll be serving it to them next time they come in for lunch so that they can give it the official seal of approval before it goes on sale in the shop and on the menu!"

Katie was also impressed with a timely suggestion for a patriotic red, white and blue Jubilee-themed pie, which was put forward by members of the Drewton's team. The Jubilee Pie will go on sale in the run-up to HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June.

She explained: "The Jubilee Pie will be sweet with a raspberry filling and a white meringue crown on the top dotted with blueberries."

Drewton's Farm Shop is renowned for its range of pies, all of which are freshly prepared in-house. Last year, its Steak Pie won a Silver Award in the annual 'England's Best Steak Pie' competition. The Steak Pie is made with beef from local farms prepared by staff in Drewton's own in-house Butcher department. As with all of the products on sale in the Farm Shop, the emphasis is on using quality, locally-sourced ingredients; Drewton's supports a network of around 140 Yorkshire-based food producers, growers and suppliers.
