Buy local, eat local this Christmas!

Published: 09/12/2011

Drewton’s Farm Shop near South Cave in East Yorkshire is encouraging its customers to ‘eat local’ this Christmas and has sourced everything you could possibly need to prepare a sumptuous festive feast from Yorkshire-based farmers, growers and food producers.

There are free range white and bronze turkeys from John Wright’s Turkeys at Wyton in East Yorkshire; cranberry sauce from Drewton’s own homemade range of preserves; sprouts on the stalk from Clappison’s farm at Walkington; and spuds fresh from May’s farm at South Cave; not to mention Christmas cakes and puddings from the Harrogate Cake Company and Driffield’s Side Oven Bakery.

Then there are pork pies made by Holme-upon-Spalding-Moor-based butcher A. Laverack and Son; quiches, award-winning pies and cakes made in-house by Drewton’s own Baker and Butcher departments; a great selection of Yorkshire cheeses; locally-produced sloe gin; not to mention game (pheasant and partridge) from the Drewton Estate; and goose, duck and capons, and pretty much every other type of meat you could possibly require, sourced from local farms.

The list goes on, and there’s even a selection of tempting hampers and other gift ideas for those in need of Christmas shopping inspiration. Drewton’s has created a range of seven themed gift hampers, so there’s something to appeal to everyone. A £5 donation from the sale of the ‘Pocklington Hamper’ will go towards Pocklington School’s fundraising efforts for Oxfam’s East Africa Appeal. Bespoke gift hampers tailored to customers’ individual tastes and budgets are also available, and there’s a range of beautiful Christmas decorations and gifts.

A place on Drewton’s next wine tasting course, which will get underway in the New Year, makes a great gift for friends and family members who are keen to learn more about wines from around the world.

Katie Taylor, proprietor of Drewton’s, said: “With such a wealth of fantastic produce available right here on our doorstep, there’s no excuse for not eating local this Christmas. Support your local farmers, growers and food producers by buying Yorkshire ingredients for your Christmas dinner. We support a network of around 140 Yorkshire-based food and drink producers, and we guarantee that we have everything you could possibly need here at Drewton’s to enjoy a fabulous festive feast.”

Katie added: “Around 80 per cent of the produce that we stock here is local, the only exceptions being the wines and some of the delicatessen produce. You could easily produce a Christmas Dinner from ingredients that have travelled fewer miles than some of your friends and family will travel to come and eat it!”

Drewton’s is now serving its Christmas menus, which feature a range of tempting seasonal dishes, in its café (known as Kitchen) and at its hugely popular Saturday evening Supper Club, which launched at the end of October. All of the dishes on the menu are made using the same high quality, locally-sourced ingredients that are on sale in the farm shop.
